Furthermore, regulations in China and other major economies are in favour of the development and use of renewable energy. This means that there is a ready market for renewable energy products. VC firms can capitalise on this opportunity by helping in the commercialisation of renewable energy technologies. Despite the opportunities, VC firms face a number of risk including market adoption risk, people risk, regulatory risk, exit risk and technology risk. These risks can be mitigated by putting in place appropriate strategies. Chapter One: Introduction 1.1Background and Problem Statement The first decade of the 21st century witnessed an increase in awareness of environmental issues as well as the recognition that these issues are now occurring at a global scale. Global warming is one of the major issues facing the world today. The recent emergence of emerging countries like China and India as global economic players in particular has helped in reorienting the debate on the sustainability of the current trajectory of the use of fossil fuel and environmental degradation
